The "Four Major Taboos" of Cleaning PU Mats (Never Do These!) Before cleaning, please keep the following prohibitions in mind; these actions will cause permanent damage to the PU layer:
1: Using a washing machine or soaking in water. Reason: PU material has a high water absorption rate; after washing, it is extremely difficult to dry thoroughly, and this can easily lead to the separation or delamination of the internal natural rubber layer from the PU layer.
2: Using cleaning agents containing alcohol, oil, or harsh chemicals. Reason: Alcohol damages the surface coating of the PU, causing it to dry out, crack, and lose its anti-slip properties.
3: Exposing the mat to direct sunlight. Reason: Ultraviolet (UV) rays are the "nemesis" of natural rubber, causing the mat to oxidize, become brittle, and fade.
4: Scrubbing with a coarse brush. Reason: PU material is relatively delicate; hard objects will scratch and damage the surface.
Proper Cleaning Steps for PU Mats:
1. After Every Practice: Light Wiping. Upon finishing your practice, gently wipe the surface of the mat with a slightly damp, soft cotton cloth or towel to remove sweat and dust. After wiping, allow it to air dry in a cool place.
2. Regular Deep Cleaning (Once every 2–4 weeks). When the mat shows visible sweat stains or develops an odor: Materials Needed: Warm water + a small amount of mild dish soap/soapy water (or a professional yoga mat cleaning spray). Method: Dampen a cleaning cloth with the diluted solution and clean the surface using a pressing motion or gentle wiping strokes. Odor Removal Tip: For stubborn odors, mix a small amount of white vinegar with water, spray the solution onto the mat, and wipe it down.
3. Rinsing and Air Drying. Use a thoroughly wrung-out towel dampened with plain water to repeatedly wipe the mat and remove any residual soap.
Finally, place the mat in a cool, well-ventilated area to air dry naturally; *never* use heat to dry it.
