Can Yoga Help You Lose Weight? Facts and Benefits

Can Yoga Help You Lose Weight? A few small studies have suggested an association between yoga and weight loss, but the results aren’t overwhelming. Nonetheless, yoga can be a useful addition to an overall weight loss program that includes regular aerobic exercise and a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables and other plant products, with calorie control.

To lose weight, you need to reduce the calories you take in and increase the calories you burn. Most types of yoga don’t have the same calorie-burning power as aerobic exercise. For example, a person who weighs 73 kg will burn 183 calories in an hour of basic yoga (Hatha), compared to 314 calories in an hour of brisk walking or 402 calories in an hour of water aerobics.

Even though yoga is not a calorie burner, it can have additional benefits that contribute to better overall weight management.

What is yoga and how is it presented?

Yoga is a mind-body practice that combines physical poses, controlled breathing, and meditation or relaxation. Yoga can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and lower heart rate. And almost anyone can do it. Yoga is considered one of the many types of complementary and integrative medicine approaches. Yoga brings together physical and mental disciplines that can help you achieve peace of body and mind. It can help you relax and deal with stress and anxiety.

Yoga has many styles, shapes and intensities. Hatha yoga, in particular, can be a good choice for stress management. Hatha is one of the most common styles of yoga. Beginners can appreciate its slower pace and easier movements. But most people can benefit from any style of yoga. It’s a matter of personal preferences.

The essential components of hatha yoga and most yoga classes:

Postures

Yoga poses, also called postures, are a series of movements designed to increase strength and flexibility. The postures vary from simple to difficult. In a simple pose, you can lie down on the floor while being completely relaxed. Difficult posture can cause you to stretch your physical limits.

Breathing

Controlling your breathing is an important part of yoga. Yoga teaches that controlling the breath can help you take control of your body and calm your mind.

Meditation or relaxation

In yoga, you can incorporate meditation or relaxation. Meditation can help you learn to be more aware of the present moment without being judgmental.
